Romo Zayuz was born on the Talz homeworld of Alzoc III. His clan was among the first to be enslaved by the Empire and forced to work in the ore mines. It was there that Romo displayed a natural talent for understanding machinery, and he often found cause to work with the mining equipment. He would make basic repairs, always under the watchful eyes of his Imperial masters, always studying and learning the equipment. He slowly began to experiment with ways to sabotage the machinery, allowing he and his kin breaks from the grueling work while the vital components were repaired. He also experimented with making certain equipment more durable or more efficient, so that he and his clansmen could seem to produce better results while actually being able to work less.
Eventually Romo learned that no amount of tinkering he did was going to have a significant impact on the overall conditions on Alzoc III, and he began to seek ways to end his enslavement. He was able to sabotage a protocol droid and cause it to have a critical failure, rendering it useless to the Imperials. He then retrieved this droid from the scrap heap and was able to salvage it’s core processor and audio circuits, fashioning himself a translator so that he could eavesdrop on Imperial conversation without their knowledge. He also fashioned a microphone that he could quietly whisper into that would activate the translator, giving the false impression that he was speaking basic. He used this to befriend a young imperial recruit who took pity on “the smart one”, and was able to trick this recruit into helping him escape Alzoc III by hiding in a false compartment in a specific ore crate bound for the Kuat shipyards. Learning from his Imperial “friend” that this was a major hub in the galaxy, he figured it was his best choice of destinations since the shipyards there were not strictly Imperial and his chances of escape were significantly improved.
Romo eventually made his way to Nar Shadda, learning that Hutt space was the best location for those trying to avoid Imperial detainment. Once there he sought employment as a ship’s mechanic, putting his natural abilities to their best use. His experiences with both sabotaging and salvaging equipment in the mines also lead him to the pursuit of creating experimental (and often dangerous) weaponry of custom design, as well as sabotage… for both fun and profit.
